How to make play tents and forts for toddlers and kids

Couch fort

Our son loves to play tent, aka fort. It’s a fun, easy game to play that costs nothing and can provide hours of entertainment for a little child. A tent can be made out of anything, anywhere in the house. Cushions from a couch can be propped up to make a tent that a child can crawl under or sheets and blankets can be used to “pitch” a tent. You can even just lie on your bed and pull a blanket over you and your child, but of course be careful to keep an opening for air to get in.

We usually make tents in our son’s room by tying the corners of sheets in knots and closing them in a dresser drawer. Just make sure you use a sturdy, low-profile dresser that won’t tip over if your child tugs at the blanket, causing the drawers to open. The other corners of the blankets can be tied to other stable pieces of furniture such as the crib, bed post or changing table. You can drape other blankets or sheets across one of the openings to create a door. Our little guy is obsessed with garages and likes to call the “doors” to the tent “garage doors.” Once the tent is constructed, have your child bring his or her stuffed animals, dolls or cars inside and it will keep him or her occupied for a long time, buying you some time to read the newspaper or a book.  But be sure never to leave a child unsupervised in a “tent.” The family pet might even like to join you and your child in the tent.  It’s a simple way to transform a room into a magical space.
